Solheim Cup day 1 in the Books USA leads 4 1/2 to 3 1/2
CREAMER from 20...count it, and the USA holds on to win the last match of the day 2 & 1 and take a one point lead into day 2
of the Solheim Cup at Rich Harvest Farms.
What an afternoon it was. Pace of play was much better and according the USA team the awful pin placements led to the long
round in the morning. All matches got concluded while there was some day light left on the course and before the hardest part
of the rain fell.
The opening foursome match saw Christina Kim and Natalie Gulbis put down Sophie Gustafson and Suzann Petersen 4 & 3, with
Kim setting the tone on the first hole by sticking her approach in close setting up almost a tap in birdie for Gulbis. The pair never looked back. Kim who missed making the team in 2007 after making it in 2005 said she waited four years for this moment. Then the Europeans countered with Becky Brewerton and Gwladys Nocera putting down Nicole Castrale and Angela Stanford of the USA 2 UP.
Europe tied the matches at 3 1/2 all, when Anna Nordqvist and Maria Horth beat Kristy McPherson and brittany Lincicome 3 UP, powered by Nordqvist chipping in from the deep rough on 13 as the Americans were closing in. This set the stage for Creamer to drain a 20 foot putt on 17 to close out Europe 2 & 1 along with partner Juli Inkster. With the win over Catriona Matthew and Janice Moodie, Inkster became the USA's all team leading point getter in Solheim Cup play. When asked about the record she replied "it mean's I am old."
The morning four ball matches have Helen Alfredsson and Tania Elosegui out first for Europe at 8:05 AM against Michelle Wie and Christina Kim for the USA. Match two has rookie Diana Luna making her first appearence for Europe along with partner Catriona Matthew, against Angela Stanford still looking for her first point (0-2-0) and Brittany Lang. Match three has Europe sending out Anna Nordqvist and Suzann Petersen against team USA's Christie kerr and Nicole Castrale. The final match has Maria Horth and Janice Moodie for Europe playing Kristy McPherson and Brittany Lincicome of the USA.
If you want to see these matches get there early. The Kane County sherriffs police issued a statement that will be doing some different things traffic wise, but that may not mean much. Fans could still hit major backups as they reach the RHF area. Speaking of Rich Harvest, club owner Jerry Rich reportedly had to shoo'ed off the fairway's of his own course after walking a few holes looking over the shoulders of the players.
No attendence was given but seasoned observers estimated it , at near or just over 30,000. The course could play long and slow on Saturday since heavy rains hit RHF after Friday's play had concluded.
Celeb's in the crowd included USA soccer's Mia Hamm, and there was a reported but unconfirmed sighting of Ernie Banks. Big time golf guru's Jim Mclean of Doral Resort and David Ledbetter from his academy at Champions Gate G.C. outside of Orlando were seen following players who are their students. Pat Hurst most likely the last player left off team USA, when Capt. Beth Daniel picked
Inkster over Hurst, showed a ton of class by showing up to support team USA and her long time friend Inkster.
The fans are behaving for the most part, but PLEASE leave your cell phones in the car if you enter the tournament. This reporter
saw at least three people who did not, and were talking on them as matches went by where they were standing.
The USA lead is only one point, so there is still plenty of work to be done...USA..see you at RHF on Saturday.
