USA DIGS IN ON BACK 9 TO WIN SOLHEIM CUP 16-12
USA-USA..The Cup stays here on American Soil. After falling behind midway through Sunday's singles
the USA turned it on during the back nine on Sunday to win the Solheim Cup for the third straight time by
a score of 16-12.
When Europe's Anna Nordqvist missed her par putt on the 16th hole to lose her match 3&2 to Morgan Pressel,
the USA had the 14 points nesscessary to retain the cup. Christina Kim then won her match on the 18th hole
2UP over Tania Elosegui, to give the USA an outright victory.
The win gave the USA eight victories in the history of the Solheim Cup which has now been played 11 times, the
next Solheim Cup will be held at Killeen Castle in Ireland in 2011. While no captains have been named yet, the
leading candidates for Europe are Annika Soremstam or Laura Davies. The USA is expected to name either
Juli Inkster who ended her career as a player at Rich Harvest Farms, or Meg Mallon who was Assistant Captain
to Beth Daniel on this years team.
In a atmosphere that seemed like a college football game or European soccer match, the singles matches started
at 10:05 on the first tee. Paula Creamer was out first for the USA against Suzann Petersen for Europe. With the match
tied at the turn, Creamer broke through for a birdie on 10 and never looked back in route to a 3&2 win. But it was the
second match that was over first when Angela Stanford won her first point of the cup 5&4 over Becky Brewerton. With the
first two matches in the clubhouse the USA lead 10-8.
Then Michelle Wie who lead her match over Helen Alfresson 3UP after seven holes only to see the match go back to
All-Square, won the 15th and 16th hole to put Alfredsson dormie. Alfredsson rallied to win 17 and shrink Wie's lead to
1 UP, but Wie matched Alfresson's birdie on 18 two win 1UP. That put the USA ahead 11-8.
Then Europe closed the gap to 11-9 when Catriona Matthew defeated Kristy McPherson 3&2, but then the next two
matches saw americans Juli Inkster rally from 2DN to earn a half point against Gwladys Nocera and Brittany Lang win
the last two holes against Laura Davies to also earn a half point. Those two matches turned the tide and saw the
monetum swing back in favor of the USA who was down in several matches at that point.
With the score at 12-10, Brittany Lincicome made it 13-10 USA with a 3&2 win over Sophie Gustafson. Europe then
closed the gap to 13-11 when Diana Luna defeated Nicole Castrale 3&2. Kim seemed on the verge of helping the USA
retain the cup when she put Elosegui dormie at 16. But Pressel's win gave the USA the point needed to retain the cup
before Kim closed out on 18. With the cup decided, Cristie Kerr and Maria Hjorth halved their match. The last match
saw Natalie Gulbis of the USA rally from 3DN against Janice Moodie, to take a 1UP lead headed to the 18th. But with
the party rolling the match was declared halved, making the final score 16-12.
