PAYNE STEWARTS LEGACY LIVES ON THROUGH NEW CLUB AND KEMPER LAKES
PAYNE STEWART WAS AN UNFORGETTABLE CHARACTER, so say his friends and the
people who knew him.
With the opening of the new Payne Stewart Golf Club, and a tribute from the home of his
first major golf championship, Stewarts legacy will continue longer than the memories
he left behind.
2009 marked the complete opening of the Payne Stewart Golf Club in Branson Missouri.
It also marked the 20th anniversary of Stewarts first win in a major, the 1989 PGA
Championship at the Kemper Lakes Golf Club. The two clubs some 525 miles and
nine hours apart, each in their own way are both honoring Stewart and his memory
in different ways.
The fall of 2008 saw the first holes of the Payne Stewart Golf Club open for play. With the
remainder of the course opening for play during May of 2009.
"I think we had a good first year," said T.J. Baggett the Director of Golf at the Payne Stewart
Golf Club. "Holes one through eight and 18 were able to open last year, this year the other
holes were opened for play.
The Payne Stewart Golf Club is loaded with actual memorabilia from Payne, that was donated
by his wife Tracey and Payne's family. The course was designed by Chuck Smith, with former
PGA Tour player and CBS sports golf commnetator Bobby Clampett as the player consultant.
"The course not only helps keep the memory of Payne alive, but is working with his foundation
that benefits several causes," Baggett said. "The course also pays a licensing fee, for the use
of Payne's trademark knickers and Tam-O-Shanter hat logo."
During the round, golfers will see plaques at each hole that are complete with stories of Payne's
life. They also add stories about his golf experiences, some of them will leave you laughing.
Something that Payne did through out his life, being the jokester and practical joker that he
was.
The views from the Branson Hills area of the Ozark Mountains, are high enough that one can
almost see to Springfield (Mo.) where Stewart grew up. In fact part of Interstate 44 around the
Springfield area, has been renamed the Payne Stewart Memorial Highway.
Baggett calls the traditional style course a "shot makers golf course" and adds that one will have
to fly some shots into the green. How far one will have to fly in those shots, depends on which sets
of tees the golfer plays from. The tee markers are shaped like Stewarts Tam-O-Shanter cap.
The tips (Pinehurst gold tees) measure 7,324 yards, the Bay Hill (green) tees play 7,046, with
the Heritage (blue) tees at 6,741. The Country Club tees (silver) 6,329 and the Hazeltine (orange)
tees play at 5,329 yards.
After a great short par four risk-reward third hole. Golfers play what Baggett calls the clubs signature
hole the par 5 fourth, that plays 576 yards from the Pinehurst tees with a pond that fronts the green.
The club was just named the 33rd best new course by Golfweek Magazine for 2009. While the course
is open to the public, memberships are available. Public facilties at the club include the driving range,
the Many Faces of Payne Stewart bar and grill. The pro shop is stocked with Payne Stewart golf club
apparel.
The Payne Stewart Golf Club is located close to the heart of Branson at, 100 North Payne Stewart Dr.

During the month of August in 1989 Stewart won his first of three major championships, when he
carded a final round five under par 67 to win the PGA Championship, at Kemper Lakes in Kildeer
IL. in Chicago's northwest suburbs. Stewart birdied four of last five holes to beat Mike Reid, Curtis
Strange and Andy Bean by one shot.
This year during the 20th anniversary of Stewarts championship. The Kemper Lakes Golf Club
which was a public course in 1989 but is now private, decided among it's membership to honor
Stewart and the memory of him winning the biggest tournament the club ever hosted.
"This was something that had been on our check list to do for a while," said Steve Jouzapaitis
the owner of Kemper lakes. "It was great how our membership advisory committee got behind
the idea to honor Payne."
In September the club dedicated the Payne Stewart room, complete with memorabilia and items
from tournament week. General Manager Janet Dobson checked the records and found the locker
in the locker room Stewart used during the PGA. That locker now has a glass front and is full of
replica items that Stewart wore or used during the tournament.
Part of the dedication to Stewart came on a day, when the club held it's first annual Jim Barnes
Cup a member guest event. Barnes was the first winner of the PGA Championship in 1916.
The golf course was set up for the event the way it was set up for the final round of the 1989 PGA,
with pins being in the exact locations. Mark Lye the Golf Channel commentator and a good friend
Stewart's, was on hand for a par 3 competition and to tell some great and funny Stewart stories.
Besides the PGA Championship, Kemper Lakes also hosted the Grand Slam of Golf before going
on to host a senior tour event for several years and the Illinois PGA Section Championship. The club
has also hosted two USGA Championships, the Womens Amateur and the Publinks Championship.
While the club currently hosts the Illinois PGA Section Match-Play Championship, the club has not held
bigger professional tournaments in recent years since turning private. That might change.
"We have put some feelers out about the possibility of hosting a womens or senior event," Jouzapaitis
says. "But that's as far as it has gone."
In the meantime Kemper Lakes continues to work on growing as a private club. "Having previously
hosted a PGA has helped our membership grow to around 250 members," Jouzapaitis says. "We have
added members the last couple of years and we are proud of that, while some clubs have lost members
with the current economy."
If you haven't played golf at Kemper Lakes since the club went private, things have changed. No the
course layout has not been changed, but the conditioning is greatly improved. The maintence fleet
that was mostly 20 years old has been newly upgraded, the clubhouse has been renovated with the
unvailing of the Payne Stewart room being the latest upgrade.
Jouzapaitis says Kemper Lakes has a great membership of people who enjoy the sport of golf, people
who pull together to make a good club. The type of club Stewart himself would most likely enjoy. While
the club is closing in on the maximum amount of members it wishes to have, there is still room to join.
