THE JUNE NEWS GOG BLOG IS HERE
JACK IS BACK AND IN A BIG WAY. The Golden Bear Jack Nicklaus appears to have
already made a deuce at his new, The Golf Club at Harbor Shores in Benton Harbor
Michigan, only 90 minutes from downtown Chicago.
Harbor Shores isn't even open yet this year (June 30th is the plan), and only saw limited
play last fall on 10 holes. But that hasn't stopped TGC at Harbor Shores from making
some news.
On Tuesday August 10th Nicklaus will head up a special foursome to play Harbor Shores,
joining the Golden Bear, will be "The King" Arnold Palmer, the man who almost won
the British Open last year at the age of 59 Tom Watson, and NBC broadcaster Johnny
Miller whose U.S. Open final round 63 at Oakmont C.C. will never be forgotten. A magical
day of golf history is expected to run from 9 AM to 9 PM.
Nicklaus and the folks at Harbor Shores operated by Northbrook based Kemper Sports
Management didn't stop there. Just announced this week by the PGA of America is that
TGC Harbor Shores will host the 2012 and 2014 Senior PGA Championship. With new
sponsor KitchenAid on board. KitchenAid based in Benton Harbor is part of the Whirlpool
Corporation. The 2011 Sr. PGA will be held on the Nicklaus designed Valhalla G.C. near
Louisville Kentucky, with the 2013 championship still TBD.
For more information on Harbor Shores visit the website at www.harborshoresresort.com.
THE HOST SITE FOR THE 2017 U.S. OPEN WILL BE ANNOUNCED ON June 16th at Pebble
Beach the site of this years U.S. Open. It now appears it's down to a two-horse race to win
selection to host the championship. Since the folks at the United States Golf Association
(USGA) seem to have cooled their heels on the suburban Detroit based Oakland Hills C.C.
in Michigan. Apparently with OHCC hosting PGA events such as the 2004 Ryder Cup and the
2008 PGA Championship, the club is on the USGA's back burner.
That leaves just the suburban Milwaukee Wisconsin location of Erin Hills the host of next
years U.S. Amateur, and the crown jewel of Chicago public golf Cog Hill Dubsdread course
#4. Who has the edge. Well the Gog Blog will have a more in depth look with Cog Hill owner
Frank Jemsek coming up this week. Jemsek does admit to being excited and anxious hear
the announcement. The latest rumor has some USGA folks nervous about going to two
unproven locations in a three year span.
Those locations being the Seattle Washington area based 2015 U.S. Open site Chambers
Bay, also run by Kemper Sports Management (KSM). Then the possible selection of Erin Hills
for 2017, maybe Cog Hill does have a chance. Either way midwest golf fans should root for both
sites landing an open in the current decade.
SPEAKING OF COG HILL..Get well wishes to architect Rees Jones. Jones who did the renovations
at Cog Hill Dubsdread, and the recently wrapped up renovations on the Medinah #3 course the
home of the 2012 Ryder Cup is healing from a fall. Jones broke his shoulder but is still working
while under going therapy on the shoulder, hopefully Jones and avid golfer will be back swinging a
club soon.

facility in Franklin IN, has filed for bankruptcy protection. According to the Franklin Star newspaper,
the director of the club is Ted Bishop the current Secretary of the PGA of America, who is reportedly
in route to a higher office within the PGA.
Bishop says he emailed all of the clubs members and investors about the filing, reportedly one
investor is former Indiana University head hoops coach Bobby Knight. The courses are designed
Jim Fazio. Bishop is not being blamed for the courses current financial condition, which came as
a surprise to one competitor who called Bishop a solid operations manager.
