THE GOG BLOG DEBUT OF 10 QUESTIONS WITH OFCC'S...

THE HISTORIC OLYMPIA FIELDS CLUBHOUSE AND CLOCK TOWER, ONE OF GOLFS
SPECIAL LANDMARKS.
Welcome to the Gog Blog's 10 Questions with, a new segment on the
GOG Blog. To start this new addition, 10 Questions speaks with Olympia
Fields Club President Jeff Goldman.
During Goldman's first year at the helm of the pride of Chicago's south
suburban golf clubs, Olympia Fields landed the 2015 United States
Amateur Championship.
But while Goldman's term of president still runs, Olympia Fields will
have plenty of other events to keep both Goldman and the members
busy. Olympia Fields has proudly opened it's doors in recent years to
showcase it's great golf facility, and the renovations done to it's south
course by architect Steve Smyers.
No longer does the south course have to take a back seat to the clubs
more known north course, that hosted the 1997 U.S. Senior Open and
the 2003 mens U.S. Open. The new south courses first serious test on
tournament play, was last August when the Illinois PGA Section
Championship was played there.
The only surprise there, was not that University of Illinois golf coach Mike
Small won, but that his second round nine under par 63 was a shock. It
was a course record, set by a player who has rewritten the Illinois PGA
section record books. But entering that week Small by his own admission
wasn't playing that well. No doubt Small caught fire at the right time.
Olympia Fields south course will again be tested this summer when the
USGA Junior Girls Championship arrives. In 2012 OFCC will host the
Junior Ryder Cup, 2013 brings in the Western Amateur, and 2015 the
U.S. Amateur comes to town. In addition every year the club hosts the
Fighting Illini Collegiate invitational golf championship, now sponsored
by Polo and Ralph Lauren.
Which leads us to Goldman who will be over seeing a busy club during
his reign as president.
GOG BLOG (RORY SPEARS)..Jeff tell us about the new construction
your members and guests will see this summer.
GOLDMAN.."We noticed some deterioration of our entrance bridge that
runs over Butterfield Creek, so we have decided to be pro-active and
replace the bridge. The bridge and road will be moved so tee shots
from our back tee on the 17th hole of the north course, no longer have
to be hit over the driveway. Our north course architect Mark Mungeam
has designed a new back tee, that will change the angle slightly and
make the hole a little longer maybe about 450 yards."
GOG BLOG..Mark Mungeam has worked on the north course before
the 1997 Senior Open and the 2003 US Open, might he do anything
else before the 2015 amateur.
GOLDMAN.."Mark comes out to the club once a year just to consult
on some playability issues and other issues that might arise. So he
will be consulted on any changes that could occur. One thing the club
is doing is working with the Village of Olympia Fields to put a water
main through our property. It will run along the parking lot by the north
course, so there will be some disruption there when the work is being
done. Two of our tee boxes are right in that area, holes one and 17.
We will ask Mark about replacing some of our parking lot with grass
and moving the tee on first hole a par 5, back."

THE 482 YARD PAR 4 SECOND HOLE ON THE SOUTH COURSE AT OLYMPIA FIELDS
GOG BLOG..The same question goes for the south course and Steve Smyers.
GOLDMAN.."I'm sure Steve will be out. Steve plays in a four ball event we host
for top amateur players from around the country. The USGA has already
reviewed the south course for the upcoming junior girls championship and
nothing needs to be done to the golf course for that event. We will consult
with Steve on anything that might be needed in advance of the US Amateur."
GOG BLOG..Recently the USGA announced that it wants to move up the
dates in August for the US Amateur, to help the college players get back
to school on time and with their teams. Does the earlier dates pose a
problem for the club.
GOLDMAN..."None at all. The club is in full agreement with the USGA on
it's plans on dates for the amateur championship."
GOG BLOG...Talk about the schedule of events your club has coming up,
it's a busy calendar looking ahead over the next five years.
GOLDMAN.." We are very happy with our future schedule on amateur
golf events, it has been an emphasis of ours the last few years. We
are very much looking forward to this summers USGA Junior Girls
Championship. The junior ryder cup next year should be real fun, and
the club is looking forward to that. These events will be hosted on the
south course. In the meantime we are still hosting our Fighting Illini
event on the north course, that event has had the US Amateur champion
in the field the last two years. Peter Uihlein won our event last year
after winning the amateur. Our illini event is sponsored now by Polo."
GOG BLOG...You hosted the 2010 Illinois PGA section Championship
last summer on your south course will that event return in a few years.
GOLDMAN.."I actually don't know. It was a great event and the club was
very pleased to see our member coach Mike Small win the event. I don't
know what the schedule for that event is, but we would love to have it back."

THE 18TH HOLE ON THE NORTH COURSE AT OLYMPIA FIELDS CAN PLAY AS A PAR 4 OR 5
GOG BLOG..Tell us more about this summers USGA junior girls championship.
GOLDMAN.."The event runs July 18th throughout the 23rd. We will have 156 of
the best junior girls between the ages of 12-17, there is two days of qualifying
stroke play then it becomes match play. 64 players advance to the match play,
and the girls are very good golfers. 10-15 of these players might be playing in
the US Womens Open Championship. People are welcome to come out and
walk along with them. We are also partnering with the Illinois Junior Golf
Association, there is a place on our website to sponsor a player and that helps
raise funds for Illinois junior golf."
GOG BLOG..There has been talk that the USGA people are so impressed
with your south course, that the championship match of the 2015 US Amateur
might be played on it, instead of the north course.
GOLDMAN.."We have a terrific relationship with the USGA, we see them at
their annual meeting and are looking forward to continuing to work with them.
As for the where the final match of the amateur will be played, that is undecided
at this time. That will be decided by the USGA, we have two great golf courses,
and which ever course they choose it should be a terrific championship."
GOG BLOG..Talk about your clubhouse, one of the great drawing cards of
the club and also in landing the US Amateur. Can you comment on talk about
making some minor renovations to it.
GOLDMAN.."The clubhouse is 110,000 square feet and the US-AM is contested
by 312 players to start with and we can fit them in our two main ballrooms. The
main symbol that people associate with Olympia Fields is our clocktower. It
looms over the 18th green of both courses. The clubhouse was built in 1925
so it does require a fair amount of upkeep. So we are always looking at some
modifications, but we are not looking at any serious work on the clubhouse in
terms of it's looks. It's not going anywhere."
GOG BLOG..You talked about your University of Illinois fall golf event how did
that come together.
GOLDMAN.."It started because one of our members, the event chairman Tony
Dimarco hosted coach Small at the club. They got talking about how Illinois
used to host an event the Chicago area, and how it would be great to do it
again. The idea was then brought to our board. What's fantastic about the event
is how great the field is, many of the top teams in college golf are here and our
members love it. Each school has a member that hosts them, that starts with
picking them up at the airport. 50-60 members helpout and volunteer with the
event."
OF COURSE..the Gog Blog could not stop at 10 questions. Since we had Jeff
on the line, we pushed him on two other topics.
ONE BEING..the rumors of the Western Golf Association looking for other host
sites for the BMW Championship, if Cog Hill was not an option beyond 2011.
Could OFCC be a local option for the tour and the WGA if nesscessary. This
asked prior to the 2014 BMW announcement of Cherry Hills CC.
GOLDMAN..'We are unaware of the WGA's plans for 2013-14. We are and have
been strong supporters of the WGA and Evans Scholars Foundation program
since it's inception. RIght now the clubs focus is on hosting the 2011 USGA
Junior Girls Championship, the 2013 Western Amateur, and the 2015 US
Amateur Championship."
TWO BEING..Sometimes the US-Amateur is used as tune up for hosting a
US Open, do you think OFCC's handling of the 2015 amateur will be looked
at as a test run for another open.
GOLDMAN.."That is probably a better question to ask the USGA, and whoever
our club president is in 2015."
