THE JUNE GOG NEWS BLOG IS HERE...

OAK MEADOWS GC LOST IT'S LONG TIME CLUBHOUSE IN FEBRUARY OF 2009 WHEN A FIRE STRUCK
It's been some 28 months since the fire that burned through the Oak Meadows clubhouse
was put out. For many who play golf at Oak Meadows in Addison, replacing the clubhouse
has not happened fast enough.
To those who remain concerned fear not, progress might be slow but it is moving along
and when completed, the golfers who play this Dupage County Forest Preserve property
should be very happy. The burned out shell of the clubhouse has now been removed,
and hauled away.
The Gog Blog caught up with Ed Stevenson, the former long time Head Professional
at Oak Meadows. This past February Stevenson was promoted into the Director of Golf
Operations job for the Forest Preserve District of Dupage County. Stevenson is also
a Co-Host on Golfers on Golf Radio, along with yours truly the Gog Blog Guy.
"It was amazing after the fire how many people I heard from that wanted to share their
memories about that clubhouse," Stevenson Said. " People who had weddings there
of their family members did, people who caddied here when it was the Elmhurst
Country Club. Most of the stories were very touching."
What Stevenson felt was important for golfers and the tax payers to know is that
progress is being made, on getting the clubhouse and a great 19th hole rebuilt.
"It's now been a while since the fire and people wonder if it ever will get rebuilt,"
said Stevenson. " But progress is being made and a more formal announcement is
expected to be made later this summer about just what the new clubhouse will be."
What the FPDDC needs to do, is make sure that the structure that is rebuilt works
for the people who will use it.
"The former clubhouse served the needs of the last 100 years in a great way,"
said Stevenson. "What we need to do now is make sure what is rebuilt is fine
for the next 100 years."
Thanks to some negotiations done over months by the county. They finally
received an insurance settlement that will not only help rebuild, but was fair
to the taxpayers. The initial offer was around 2 million dollars, by the time the
check was cut the figure was closer to 7 million.
The plan is for the new clubhouse to have a nice restaurant and balcony for
people to enjoy, pre and post round activities while having a great view of the
course. The new clubhouse will not be redone to do banquets for 300 anymore,
while still being something that pays tribute to the old Elmhurst CC clubhouse.
One factor is that the clubhouse will be designed to be much more energy efficient,
than the previous one.
.
INSIDE OR OUTSIDE THERE IS STILL A CURRENT 19TH HOLE OPERATING AT OAK MEADOWS
Stevenson was happy to report that golf is continuing at Oak Meadows with a new
modular building serving as a 19th hole, both inside complete with a full bar and flat
screen TV. Outside with tables complete with umbrellas and views of the first hole,
9th green and driving range.
The money the county got from the insurance settlement, will all be put back into
the clubhouse and golf course. It will not be spread around to other projects.
When asked about the flooding problem that hampers the course at times when
rain is very excessive, Stevenson said. "That is a problem we are studying, we
are trying to examine just what our options are in correcting it."

defeated Sam Snead can be made at (630)-595-0071, or www.DuPageGolf.com.
