HIGHLANDS OF ELGIN, OLD HAWTHORNE SHOWCASE SCHAUPETER DESIGN (UPDATED)
THE 254 YARD PAR 3 7TH HOLE AT THE HIGHLANDS OF ELGIN, IS
JUST PART OF THE GREAT DESIGN WORK BY ST. LOUIS BASED
ARCHITECT ART SCHAUPETER.
EDITORS NOTE...This story orignally ran on July 29, 2011. It's
being rerun because on some projects, Schaupeter is teaming up
with Batavia based architect Greg Martin our lead story from
yesterday. The Martin/Schaupeter team remain a finalist for both
the upcoming major renovation project in Addison, at the Dupage
County Forest Preserve District Course Oak Meadows. In addition
to two projects based in China.
ART SCHAUPETER
Schaupeters work at the Highlands of Elgin has boosted the course
to a rating of the # 2 public course in Illinois, in the recent 2012 Best
You Can Play in state rankings by Golfweek Magazine.
One half of the City of Elgins one-two punch of public golf is, The
Highlands of Elgin (featured here July 5 2011). While "The Highlands"
was started by architect Keith Foster, a majority of the project
was done by Fosters former assistant Art Schaupeter.
The Highlands took years for the city of Elgin to complete because
of delays, in finally obtaining the property in what's now the center
of the golf course. A mining operation had to be completed and
moved from the property before the golf course could be completed.
A recent visit back to Highlands of Elgin, showed just why the
golfers, media, and Golfweek Magazine rate it so high. The new
Highlands design was just finished last summer. But GW already
has the course in the Top 10 Municipal Courses in Amercia and
the 4th Best Public Course in Illinois.
Some of the best holes at the Highlands, are the ones that Schaupeter
did around the quarry. The par 3 254 seventh hole, was created to
be a "reverse design" of the famed 16th hole at Cypress point. There
might not be an ocean anywhere close, but the hole is already one
of the best par 3's in the Chicago area. It has golfers that have made
the trek to the Highlands of Elgin talking.
THE 140YD PAR 3 4TH HOLE AT THE HIGHLANDS HAS NO BAIL OUT,
THE QUARRY WITH THE FINISHED COURSE AROUND IT. THAT INCLUDE
HOLES 4-7-8-11.
"The drama of the four holes around the quarry are unique for
the Chicago area, " Schaupeter said. "On the par 3 7th hole I
used the principals from the par 3 16th hole at Cypress Point.
The hole can play 260 yards, but it's not as tough as the card
makes it out to be because it's all downhill. The hole can play
more like a par 3 1/2."
Schaupeter has done several courses of his own scattered
around the midwest and midsouth. Some of them include
Highland Meadows GC in Windsor CO., The Republic
Golf Club in San Antonio TX., and Buckhorn GC in
Comfort TX for, Foresight Golf. But the course that really
shows his talents is the Old Hawthorne GC in Columbia
Missouri. Old Hawthorne opened on May 19th 2007.

"I try and make the courses fun for the golfers, and profitable for the owners," Art Schaupeter.

"THE BEST WAY TO LEARN GOLF COURSE DESIGN IS GO OUT IN THE
FIELD AND DO IT.", Art Schaupeter.

"The keys to scoring at Old Hawthorne are the approach shot and
putting. You can cut off yardage and even drive holes, but if you
don't pull it off it's probably double bogey or worse. "
TRAVIS McCUBBIN PGA HEAD PRO OLD HAWTHORNE.
Currently Schaupeter is working on some smaller renovation projects
like the practice area at Plum Creek Golf Club in Kyle Texas. He will
continue work at The Orchards Golf Course in Belleville IL., after
renovating two holes last year, he will do one more this year. Then
will adjust green contours on six holes at the Forest Hills Country Club.
Two projects in Texas and Colorado look ready to move ahead next
year in 2012. Schaupeter is hopeful two other projects in China will
push forward too.
One course Schaupeter would love to start is a potential project
near the St. Louis area. The original partners have moved on, and
with new financial backing the course could something special.
Schaupeter is hoping new investors can be attracted to resume
building the property.
Shaupeter spent over a decade working with Foster, from the
designs he has created the time is was well spent. Hopefully
Chicago golfers will not only enjoy the Highlands of Elgin soon,
but visit other courses designed by Schaupeter around the country.
