THE PAR 3 14TH AT MISTWOOD GC HOME OF THE PHIL KOSIN ILLINOIS WOMENS OPEN
THREE PLAYERS SIT A TOP THE LEADERBOARD AFTER ROUND ONE OF THE ILLINOIS WOMENS
OPEN AT 2 UNDER PAR. THEY WILL TEE OFF TOGETHER AT 1 PM ON FRIDAY FOR ROUND 2.
Michelle Ellis of Chicago Heights, Allison Fouch of Indianapolis both LPGA tour players,
and amateur Sammi Sloan of Lansing, who plays for the University of Illinois and caddies
at Idlewild C.C. in Flossmoor recorded two under par 70's.
All three players had the benefit of teeing off early in the day before the winds picked
up, making play on the closing holes around the lake on Mistwood GC difficult.
Ellis was in the first group out, and was one of the two groups that finished before a
50 minute weather delay hit the course late in the morning.
The first group had some additional drama when Megan Godfrey of Chicago who
was the early leader -1 at the turn, then struggled to finish when she encountered
what appeared to be a loss of sight in one eye and numbness in her side and arm.
That according to her father who was also caddying for her.
Paramedics were summoned to the scoring tent as she signed for a first round 82,
after a brief examination she was taken to an area hospital. While Godfrey was feeling
better by mid-afternoon, the hospital still wanted to keep her overnight and run another
test on her Friday morning. As a result she has withdrawn from the tournament.
Ellis who is the President of the LPGA Tour Player Directors, along with Fouch were both
recruited to play in the event by two-time IWO past champion LPGA player Nicole Jeray.
While the three of them were playing in the recent US Womens Open at Oakmont.
Since both players are two shots ahead of Jeray who finshed with an even par 72 and
tied for fourth place, it left Jeray wondering if she should have told them to come join her
in the field.
Jeray said she hit it great and several lessons with Dr. Jim Suttie at Cog Hill over the
last week helped. Jeray said she might also be headed for putting guru Kevin Weeks studio
also at Cog Hill. Jeray said a new putter fitting at Bettenardi putters this upcoming week
should help her going forward as well. Jeray joked that IWO founder the late Phil Kosin,
might have reached down and hit a few of her putts away from the hole before they should
have gone in.
In spite of high temperatures expected on Friday, Sloan says she will do what she always
does as a caddy her summer job at Idlewild C.C., in terms of staying hydrated. Hopefully
she won't have to look for balls in the trees in round two, but looks forward to the challenge
of playing in the final group with two LPGA players.
One group in front of them will be Jeray along with fellow par shooters, (A) Kris Yoo of
Schaumburg, and Nikki Miller (A) of Waukegan. Christine Meier (A) of Rochester Hills MI.
and (A) Alex Lederhausen of Hinsdale both posted one over par 73's.(A) Rebecca Lederhausen
is one shot back at 74.
The round of the day, was being played by (A) Ann Vrdolyak of Flossmoor who was one
under par through 15 holes, with most of the round being played in highwind's and higher
temperatures than the morning groups faced. Vrdolyak then took a 10 on the par 4 16th,
that coupled with a bogey six on the par 5 18th hole left her at 78 (+6).
Three time past IWO champion Kerry Postillion of Burr Ridge, who admitted she hasn't
been playing much of late. Struggled with her driver (82+10) and lost the battle of her household
to daughter Samantha (78+6). Kerry Postillion says if she figures out whats wrong with her
driver she will use it in round two, if not it will be all 3 wood off the tee.
